Spent a predictably ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out character placement and heights and perspective, and now I’m jumping in to preliminary sketches. I’m liking the current trio’s placement, but I don’t know what the hell I’m gonna do with the other eight characters!
So goes the natural progression of things…
Step 1: Buy (and deface) manikin in the hopes that I’ll be able to use it to construct a scene that I can take a photo of. (See previous post.)
Step 2: Make embarrassing doodles of the cast with the intention of affixing each character’s face to the manikin so I can take photos of it in different locations on a table and then combine all the images to use as a reference. Riiiiiight.
(Is it just me or do all the girls in the show suffer from magnificent cases of Resting BitchFace?)
Step 3: Give up.
Step 4: Try to recreate the community center and background buildings in Google SketchUp.
Well, that’s shit. Fuck realism; let’s go for pretty composition instead.
Step 5: Decide to take the ambition down a notch and use a photo as a direct reference for the background.
Now we’re getting somewhere.
Step 6: Create a rough and hideously colored layout based on the above photo.
Step 7: (In case the previous steps weren’t obsessive enough…) Create a rough height guide based on IMDB and photos. I want to push myself to draw more expressive figures, so I’m going for greater height disparity than might be realistic. For now, let’s say the amazons are around 8 heads tall, the average hooligans are around 7, and the shorties are around 6.
I also created some shapes to indicate the height of available seating I found in reference photos, divided at the point you’d ordinarily put your butt.
Remember, kids, the goal for this illustration is for me to learn to be as loose as possible. Ha… ha… ha……..
Finally bought a manikin— “not to be confused with a mannequin,” says Wikipedia!
I’m planning to start that overly-ambitious Misfits illustration this week, and I’m hoping this little bastard will make it a lot easier to figure out how to pose everyone and where the hell to put them.
(See official entry #1, in which I finally work up the nerve to actually start the drawing.)

Aaaah, thanks!! (Hopefully this encouragement will stop me from chickening out!)
Ahoy, followers! I’m gearing up to draw a piece of Misfits fan art. The goal is to draw all the (main) delinquents together on the roof of the community center, but the idea of cramming eleven people onto that roof (yes, I’m counting Rudy Two) is a bit daunting.
Right now I’m thinking of arranging everyone as though they’re meant to be posing for one big promo-style cast shot, but instead they’ll all be goofing off/ignoring the “camera.”
-Rudy One maybe holding a Curly Wurly and stealing a second one from Rudy Two (who’ll be wearing That Sweater)? (On the other hand, it might be better for him to be harassing Jess and/or Finn)
-Nathan bugging Simon, Kelly trying to stop him (or about to punch him)
-Curtis and Alisha probably together (I liked the idea of the later Alisha storylines, but I didn’t like the execution… trampy, selfish Alisha is the best Alisha)
-Abby holding some booze and looking wistfully into the distance
-Finn leaning towards Jess, Jess leaning towards Alex, and Alex ignoring everyone to fix his hair (possibly Rudy One pushing Finn towards Jess?)
Let me know if you have any requests or suggestions! I haven’t yet finished the final season (I’m only a couple of episodes in) so please don’t spoil anything after that! (But if there’s something really important that I need to see before finalizing the drawing, just let me know “Hey you should see episode __ before you do this thing!”)
Also, I’ve been avoiding looking at any Misfits fan art until I’m done with the series, so if you know that someone’s already done this, let me know. :)
My submission to this week’s Weekly Art Challenge: Femmes Fatales!
I decided to depict Queen Medb as she might’ve looked on the battlefield. I gave her masculine clothing because it seemed more fitting for the battlefield, and because there’s an entire epic written about the war she caused in what was basically a marital dick-measuring contest. Seemed appropriate.
The crow in the background is the Badb.
Progress shots for an illustration I’m hoping to finish up later today. :)
Snapshot version of my previous Jonathan Creek drawing. :D
